And that’s the difference between chasing and leading. Because Clark, on the other hand, gained +1.52 strokes over the field with his putter. Scheffler crafted the best technical golf on Saturday, Clark crafted the best golf of the US Open: less clean, dirtier, but full of saves, heavy putts, and shots that make you want to turn off the TV and go to the driving range in the middle of the night.

Clark shot a 70 with two birdies, an eagle, and four bogeys. It wasn’t an elegant round, but it was tremendously effective. The most important shot came on the par-5 16th, after the bogey on the 15th: a wood from about 275 yards, the ball just over a meter from the hole. An eagle. At that point, the tournament could have started to open up again. Instead, Clark putted six shots between himself and almost everyone else.

But the real key to his Saturday wasn’t just the 16th. It was the amount of damage he avoided. He holed over 50 feet of putts for par. Then there were those sensational recoveries that don’t always end up in the most obvious numbers, but tell the whole story. The bump-and-run on the 10th, for example, was a small masterpiece: ball handled low, perfect control, the reading of a player who isn’t looking for a beautiful shot but the right one. In a tournament like this, those are almost invisible birdies.

The difference between Clark and the others lies precisely there: he didn’t play the best tee-to-green of the round, he didn’t give the impression of dominating every shot, but he won the micro-battles. Where others bogeyed, he saved par. Where others converted a mistake, he came away with a near-miracle. Where Scheffler displayed the purest golf, Clark displayed the most useful golf.

The best straight number of the day remains Emiliano Grillo’s 67, a -3 that on this Saturday seems almost off the charts. With a field average above 73, a round like that isn’t simply «excellent»: it’s the stuff of fluorescent highlighters. Grillo rallied to par overall and recorded the only real comeback round of the day.

Also in the group at -1 are Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim, and Sam Stevens. Theegala closed with a 70, staying in the loop with very mature golf. Tom Kim didn’t repeat his super Friday, but his tournament continues to be solid: after 54 holes, he’s still there, under par, among some big names. Stevens, on the other hand, continues to be the less «famous» but more resilient name at the top of the field: 68-69 in the first two rounds, then solid enough to stay in the chasing pack.

Behind them, Saturday left several notable victims. Rory McIlroy closed with a 73 and slipped to +3. The toughest part was the back nine: a nice 40, with five bogeys. He was still in a position from which he could try to invent something, but then he shut himself out. His Saturday was the opposite of Clark’s: instead of limiting the damage, every small crack began to widen, especially with the clubs in hand, where he lost almost 1.5 shots to the field.
