Scottie Scheffler sensationally missed the cut at the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open, ending his historic streak of 78 consecutive weekends played on the PGA Tour.

This unexpected failure marked the end of an incredible streak of almost four full years (1,428 days) during which the American has not missed a single cut since August 2022, and at the same time his two-year streak of placing in the Top 25 in all tournaments was ended. 

After the performance, Scheffler admitted that his game was not disastrous, but his struggles with approach shots often left him too far from the flag, making it difficult for him to create easier birdie opportunities. The tournament served as his final test before the upcoming Major, The Open Championship, which will take place next week at Royal Birkdale.

The Open, according to him, on the other hand, was an extraordinary experience, so he emphasizes that perhaps adaptation is one of the key things when it comes to tournaments like this. However, Scheffler is still not sure whether he will perform next year or not.

“Back next year? It’s funny, like last year, I feel like I got really frustrated on this golf course playing some good golf and just not really able to get anything going as well. You know, then I went and played well at The Open Championship,“ Scheffler said.

“So it’s suiting me well over the years, but like I said, I haven’t played well here but I’ve played pretty well at The Open.

So it’s always a balancing; it could be one of those things where you just get over jet-lag, get used to new style of golf, new types of grasses, and maybe I just haven’t adjusted as quick, or maybe this golf course just doesn’t suit my eye much.

I’ll reflect on that kind of at the end of the year and assess what my plans are going into next season.“

After his performance at the Scottish Open, he spoke about his streak of 78 consecutive cuts made. Although some expected Scheffler to be even more dominant this season, the American golfer continues to perform at a high level from tournament to tournament, despite occasional setbacks.

However, the American golfer points out that he is proud that he has not finished outside the top 20 many times. His goal is to analyze his game, understand what the next steps are and make new moves towards the future.

“Yeah, it’s a little different now with some of the Signature Events not having cuts,“ he said.

“But you know, this is; I don’t think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

I’m definitely proud of the consistency, and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground. But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.

A little different than I was planning. Figure out how I get down to Birkdale and go from there.“ he concluded.

The next challenge for Scottie Scheffler is the appearance at The Open Championship in 2026, the last Major tournament of the season, which is played from July 16 to 19 at the famous Royal Birkdale course in England. 

Scheffler comes to this tournament as the defending champion, having won the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush last year, and despite an early exit in Scotland, the world number one remains among the main favorites to win. 

According to tradition, he will officially return the trophy to the organizers on Monday morning before starting preparations on the course. After the conclusion of this major competition, the American will take a short three-week break to rest and will skip tournaments such as the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship.
