Bryson DeChambeau has shared his thoughts on Yasir Al-Rumayyan’s surprise appearance at LIV Golf New York, admitting that he was not sure what exactly brought the Saudi businessman back to the tournament.

Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, had been one of the most important figures behind LIV Golf since the league was launched. However, his position became much less clear earlier this year after the PIF withdrew its funding in April.

He had also stayed away from LIV Golf tournaments in recent months, which made his appearance in New York particularly interesting. Al-Rumayyan attended the final round alongside United States President Donald Trump and nine-time major champion Gary Player.

Trump’s presence was hardly surprising considering the event was being played at his golf course. Al-Rumayyan’s visit, however, immediately led to questions about whether he could still have some involvement in LIV Golf’s future.

DeChambeau was among those who did not have an answer.

DeChambeau refuses to speculate about Al-Rumayyan’s visit

DeChambeau finished tied for 38th at LIV Golf New York and was asked about Al-Rumayyan’s appearance during his post-tournament press conference.

The American revealed that the players only learned shortly before the final round that Al-Rumayyan was planning to attend.

“I think we all found out last night that he was going to be out here,” DeChambeau said.

“I think he needed to have some conversations with the president. That was a whole ‘nother thing. I’m not going to get involved with that.”

DeChambeau clearly did not want to speculate about the nature of the conversations between Al-Rumayyan and Trump. However, the two-time major champion was much more willing to discuss what the Saudi businessman has done for LIV Golf and the sport in general.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the PIF’s future involvement in the league, DeChambeau was pleased to see Al-Rumayyan return.

“But it was great to see him out here,” DeChambeau continued. “I think he’s done wonders for us and the global game of golf. I think there’s a great place for the PIF and where they want to be moving forward.

Where that is, I’m not exactly sure. I have no idea. But I know that he’s supported golf for a long, long time, and as this transitions over hopefully into the new investor’s hands and into the players’ hands, we really have an opportunity to align a lot of the global incentives to be a force for good for the game.”

His comments come at an interesting time for LIV Golf. The league has entered another period of transition after years of being heavily associated with the PIF and Al-Rumayyan.

The Saudi fund provided the financial power that allowed LIV Golf to attract some of the biggest names in the sport, including DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson. Huge contracts and record prize money helped the league establish itself as a genuine rival to the PGA Tour.

Al-Rumayyan was also one of the most important figures during LIV Golf’s early years. His absence from tournaments after the PIF funding decision therefore created questions about his relationship with the league.

Seeing him alongside Trump in New York has now brought those questions back.

LIV Golf is preparing for another chapter

DeChambeau’s comments also show that the players themselves may not know exactly what role the PIF will have in LIV moving forward.

The 32-year-old remains one of the league’s most recognizable players and has repeatedly supported LIV since making the move from the PGA Tour in 2022.

His profile has only increased since then. DeChambeau won his second US Open title at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2024 and has remained one of the biggest attractions at major championships despite playing most of his golf outside the PGA Tour.

That makes his view of LIV Golf’s future particularly important, although he appears comfortable waiting to see how the league’s new structure develops.

The reference to the league potentially transitioning into the hands of new investors and players is particularly significant. LIV Golf’s long-term financial structure has been one of the biggest questions surrounding the competition since the PIF’s decision earlier this year.

For DeChambeau, however, the priority appears to be finding a structure that benefits golf as a whole rather than worrying about who ultimately controls the league.

Al-Rumayyan’s return does not necessarily mean that the PIF is preparing to become heavily involved again. His meeting with Trump could have been unrelated to LIV, something DeChambeau himself appeared to acknowledge.

Still, his presence at a LIV Golf tournament after months away was always going to attract attention.
