These changes are great news for match play fans, as it makes a triumphant return and will play a central role in the final stretch of the season. They are also welcome news for organizers, broadcasters, and sponsors, because this approach may well be the definitive solution to the headaches that have historically plagued the Tour Championship. It remained a stable, stroke play tournament among the top 30 players on the money list, from 1987 to 2006, when the FedEx Cup was introduced and the top 30 in the annual points standings began playing it in the same format. In 2019, a system was introduced that assigned a starting score to each of the top 30 based on their position in that standings: the first started at -10, the second at -8, and so on. The new format will debut in 2028.
