The countdown has begun for the Portugal Invitational (July 31 to August 2), the first PGA Tour Champions tournament held in continental Europe, featuring a field of 78 players over 50 years old. This highly lucrative event boasts a purse of €2,635,000.

Victoria Golf Club in Vilamoura will be the stage where these experienced competitors will demonstrate their enduring talent. Among them is the legendary Bernhard Langer, who, at 68, has earned €34 million in the competition after racking up 47 victories on this tour.

On the national front, all eyes are on Miguel Ángel Jiménez, the sole representative in the championship, who has already amassed €15.8 million from this veterans’ league.

This season, Stewart Cink is the dominant player, having secured four titles. Also noteworthy: Ernie Els, a four-time major champion, designed the course where the tournament will be played.

Despite the stratospheric prize money, the economic return generated by the event far surpasses it: with a projected audience of 80 million viewers in more than 170 countries, the estimated impact is 45 million euros.

The tournament, which begins on Friday, is the first of five editions under the collaboration agreement signed by PGA TOUR Champions, Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, and Turismo do Algarve (from 2026 to 2030). Looking ahead, plans include hosting a Ryder Cup and featuring other legends such as Tiger Woods (50).

The opening press conference for the event, held this Tuesday, was attended by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Pedro Machado; the President of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade; and the President of Turismo do Algarve, André Gomes. The Mayor of Loulé, Telmo Pinto; the President of the PGA TOUR Champions, Miller Brady; the member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Ernie Els; the Co-Founder and Head of Real Estate and Hospitality of Arrow Global, John Calvão; and the tournament director, Todd Rhinehart, reflecting the broad institutional and sporting support that accompanies this first edition.
