At his last tournament, the Genesis Scottish Open, Scottie Scheffler had an unexpected fall and missed the weekend cut.

However, he and his team hope that this unexpected weekend off will provide valuable rest, extra preparation time and renewed motivation ahead of his title defense at the final major of the season, The Open Championship.

Scottie Scheffler on missing the cut

The 30-year-old will have a few days to analyze where he made the most mistakes and possibly determine what needs to be changed in the upcoming tournaments. The world no. 1 commented on his performance in Scotland at a press conference ahead of The Open. 

Scottie shared a conversation with his friend who revealed to him what he can do when he misses the cut. Scheffler is used to making cuts and always fighting for the top of the table, but ultimately this tournament was a disappointing experience for him. 

“Yeah. Yeah, I don’t really know how to elaborate on that, to be honest with you,“ he said.

It’s funny, one of my buddies who plays out here had a long text to me about what you can do when you miss a cut. He was like, hey, you can practise at the facilities.

You can still go to the gym. You can also go to the next tournament. It was basically all my options. He never sent it to me, but he told me about it. I was like, oh, you should have sent it; I was a bit lost.»

Scheffler admitted that it was very frustrating to end the tournament in such a way, but this can certainly serve as a strong motivation for him in the face of probably one of the biggest challenges of this season.

“I would say missing a cut is probably the hardest thing. I don’t think it hurts as much as coming close to winning and finishing second. I felt like coming in second at Travelers hurt more than missing the cut, but missing the cut is significantly more frustrating is how I would describe it.“ he continued.

Extra time

Scheffler explained that he used the extra time after the missed cut for training, preparation and earlier arrival on the course of The Open. He pointed out that he trained in the gym, played several rounds in order to get to know the course as well as possible, and took advantage of the opportunity for additional rest in a week that carries a lot of pressure.

Although he admitted that it was frustrating for him to have the weekend off, he emphasized that it was not necessarily the worst thing because it allowed him to adapt to the conditions earlier and prepare better for the title defense.

Scheffler’s goals

A golfer of such caliber, as already pointed out, is not used to such moments. Nevertheless, the next tournament will be an excellent opportunity for him to improve his impression after a bad result and try to achieve a triumph. For many, Scottie Scheffler is still the first favorite before The Open Championship, while after him, most give Rory McIlroy the best chance.

The world number one has a strong desire to improve his impression after a disappointing experience and further consolidate his position at the top of world golf. The other rivals are waiting for their chance with the desire to take over the leading position from Scheffler, who has been one of the most dominant figures in the sport for the past few years.
