Since Bethpage, the situation has progressively worsened, bringing the climate we’ve always commonly confined to the Ryder Cup to the U.S. Open, even leading to the dismissal of the President of the PGA of America.

The 154th Open Championship kicks off the day after tomorrow on the Royal Birkdale course, and the R&A, rightly concerned about the management of fans on the course, has announced that it has specifically developed a new code of conduct for fans.

The Commitment is a document structured around five essential points:

Respect for the players
Respect for the course
Mutual respect
Being attentive
Enjoying responsibly.
Each point is then developed (always in a fundamental way) to design what can be defined as the ideal tournament.

The document concludes with instructions on how to report inappropriate behavior and, more importantly, with the affirmation that by attending The Open Championship, fans (the R&A is expecting a new attendance record—Editor’s note) agree to abide by the Commitment, which will be communicated to them through multiple channels, before and during the tournament.
