Jon Rahm’s future with LIV Golf has again become a big topic after a new claim appeared only hours after the league entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States.

The Spaniard, who joined LIV at the end of 2023, reportedly left the league’s player group chat on August 9. The claim was made by golf account Flushing It, which said Danny Lee is the only other current or recently involved player known to have left the chat.

The timing created more questions because the 2026 LIV Golf season did not finish until August 23 in Indiana. Rahm was therefore still playing for Legion XIII when he reportedly removed himself from the group conversation.

Nothing about leaving a group chat confirms that Rahm is leaving LIV Golf, and the claim has not been independently confirmed. However, it comes at a time when the former world No. 1 is refusing to give a clear answer about what his golf schedule will look like beyond this year.

Rahm’s name appears in bankruptcy documents

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 protection in New Jersey on September 8 as part of a court-supervised restructuring. The league says the process is designed to help it deal with older financial obligations and move toward a different business model.

Court documents show LIV has estimated assets of between $100 million and $500 million, while liabilities are listed between $500 million and $1 billion.

Rahm is also the player with the largest unsecured claim in the filing. The two-time major champion is listed as being owed $7,472,527.47 under a Player Participation Agreement.

Bryson DeChambeau is listed with a claim of more than $5.7 million, Dustin Johnson is owed around $5.5 million, Cameron Smith around $4.8 million and Tyrrell Hatton around $3.4 million.

Those figures do not necessarily show the full amount still left on each player’s contract. They represent unsecured claims included in the bankruptcy documents at the time of filing.

LIV CEO Scott O’Neil said the league wants to continue and build a more sustainable version of the competition. The proposed next phase is expected to include a different ownership model and greater player involvement.

Another important part of the process concerns the current player contracts. LIV has told the court it will seek approval to reject existing agreements as it moves away from what has been described as LIV Golf 1.0.

That could give several players a decision to make about whether they want to sign new deals for the next version of the league.

Rahm is still not giving a clear answer

Rahm has already been questioned about his future before this week’s Irish Open on the DP World Tour.

Speaking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland, the 31-year-old said he remains ready to respect his existing agreement, but also admitted there are many possible outcomes.

“There’s just a lot of things in place. There’s a lot of things that could happen. It’s one of those things with time, time’s going to tell,” Rahm said.

When he was asked about a possible path back to the PGA Tour, the Spaniard again stopped short of closing any door.

“I still have a contract with LIV 1.0 that I’m more than willing to fulfill. Like I said, time will tell.”

Asked again about the PGA Tour, Rahm smiled and said: “We’ll see what happens.”

Jon has been one of LIV Golf’s biggest names since making the move. He has won three consecutive LIV individual championships and has remained an important part of Legion XIII.

Still, he has also continued playing DP World Tour events when his schedule allowed. This week he is at the Irish Open, and he is also expected to play the BMW PGA Championship.

The Spaniard has not won another major championship since joining LIV. His two biggest titles remain the 2021 US Open and the 2023 Masters. He has still produced good results in several big events, but another major trophy has not arrived.

For now, there is no official confirmation that Rahm has decided to leave LIV Golf. Leaving the player chat, if the report is accurate, may mean very little by itself.

As one of the best golfers in the world, Rahm’s future naturally attracts a lot of attention. The Spaniard now seems to have two different options in front of him, and sooner or later he will have to decide which one is right for his career. It is a difficult situation, but Rahm will know that choosing the right path could have a big impact on what comes next.
