Tom McKibbin has confirmed that he still has several years remaining on his LIV Golf contract, although there are now many questions over what the league will look like in 2027.

The Northern Irish golfer joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII at the start of 2025, making one of the biggest decisions of his young career after earning a PGA Tour card through his performances on the DP World Tour.

Things look quite different around LIV Golf less than two years later. There is uncertainty over the future format of the league and its financial situation, while McKibbin has returned to play several tournaments on the DP World Tour.

The 23-year-old is currently competing at the British Masters, where he was asked what he knows about his LIV future and whether he expects to remain there next season.

McKibbin pointed out that he is still under contract and expects LIV to continue, even if several things still have to be decided before the start of 2027.

“There are obviously a lot of things to figure out and I know they are definitely trying their hardest,” McKibbin said.

“As far as I am concerned, I’ve got a couple of years left, but, at the same time, I am going to play as much as I can over here until the end of the year and then see what happens.

“I’m playing Ireland, Wentworth and France. Still undecided about the Dunhill, then Spain and India.”

McKibbin’s words come at a complicated moment for the breakaway league. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has ended its financial backing, while LIV has been working on finding new investment ahead of what has been described as a possible new version of the competition next year.

The leaders of the controversial league are clearly frustrated by what has happened over the last few months, but they are aware that they have to accept the situation and do everything they can to set new goals for LIV Golf and try to become dominant again.

For the Northern Irishman, however, the next few months will also be important for another reason.

Ryder Cup qualification has started and the 2027 event will be played at Adare Manor in Ireland, something that naturally means a lot to McKibbin.

“That would be pretty special,” he said when asked about making the European team.

“To play a Ryder Cup in Ireland would be a bucket-list thing to do. Yeah, I’ll definitely give it my best shot.”

The young golfer grew up at Holywood Golf Club, the same club where Rory McIlroy learned the game, and playing a Ryder Cup in Ireland would probably be one of the biggest moments of his career so far.

McIlroy warned McKibbin before his LIV move

McKibbin’s Ryder Cup situation is interesting considering some of the conversations that took place before he joined LIV Golf.

At the beginning of 2025, McIlroy admitted that the younger Northern Irishman had contacted him before making his decision. The former world No. 1 was clear that he would have chosen a different path.

McIlroy believed McKibbin was giving up a lot after working hard to earn his PGA Tour card, with access to Grand Slam tournaments and a possible Ryder Cup appearance among the things he mentioned at the time.

Still, McKibbin decided to join Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Caleb Surratt at Legion XIII.

The Northern Irish golfer later explained that potentially making qualification for some of the biggest tournaments more difficult was not enough to change his decision, and he began his LIV career in February 2025. 

As expected, the reactions to his move were not very positive. Fans were angry and frustrated, not only because he joined the controversial league, but also because of similar decisions made by much more experienced players who had been an important part of the PGA Tour for years.

McKibbin won the Hong Kong Open late last year, a victory that earned him places in the 2026 Masters and The Open. He finished the tournament at 27-under and seven shots ahead of Peter Uihlein, giving himself another chance to compete on some of golf’s biggest stages.

His results in the Grand Slam tournaments this season were more difficult. McKibbin missed the cut at the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open, although he finished tied for 30th at the Genesis Scottish Open in July.

On LIV, the 23-year-old has had several better finishes this season, including a tie for fifth in Mexico City and a tie for sixth in New York. He also finished tied for 12th in Indianapolis before the team event.
