Scottie Scheffler has earned huge amounts of money during his golf career, but according to his caddie Ted Scott, even a possible $1 billion offer would not have been enough to convince the American to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf.

The world No. 1 has become the biggest figure in men’s golf over the last few years, collecting 22 PGA Tour victories and four major championships. His success has also brought huge financial rewards, but Scott claims money has never been the main thing motivating the 30-year-old.

Speaking on The Gravy and the Sleeze podcast, Scheffler’s long-time caddie recalled a conversation they had when LIV Golf was trying to bring many of the biggest golfers in the world into its league.

At the time, Scott believed Scheffler could receive an offer worth around $250 million. The response he received from the American was quite clear.

“And then I remember whenever all the LIV stuff was going on, you know, he was number one in the world at the time, I didn’t know, but I said, ‘They’re probably going to offer you like $250m to go over there.’

And he said, ‘I don’t care what they offer me. They can offer me a billion dollars. I’m going to play where the best players are because I just want to beat people.’

I was like, ‘Wow, this guy’s just different,’ you know,” Scott said.

Scheffler was never announced as the recipient of an actual $1 billion LIV offer. Instead, the number came from his own response when discussing how much money it might take for him to consider moving.

Many famous golfers made a different decision when LIV started. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith were among the major champions who left the PGA Tour.

Scheffler stayed and continued building his career on the PGA Tour.

Scott also recalled another early sign of his golfer’s attitude toward money. When they first started working together, Scheffler was already ranked inside the world’s top 20 but did not have sponsors on his golf bag.

“I asked him, I was like, ‘Why don’t you have sponsors?’

And he’s like, ‘Well, because I just want to play with the equipment that I want to play.’”

Scottie has spoken similarly about money himself in the past. During the discussion about Ryder Cup payments, the American stressed that financial rewards were never the reason why he started playing golf.

“I want to win just as bad for zero dollars as I do for whatever millions of dollars it is.

The money’s not my motivation, it’s not something I think about, it’s just a bonus that happens when you’re out here playing tournaments.”

Scheffler has just earned another huge PGA Tour prize

Those comments are interesting considering the amount of money Scheffler has now earned through his results.

The 30-year-old recently won the Tour Championship at East Lake, finishing at 16-under and three shots ahead of Viktor Hovland. The victory gave Scheffler $10 million and his second FedEx Cup title.

It was also his 22nd PGA Tour victory and third title of the 2026 season. Earlier in the year he won The American Express before taking the FedEx St. Jude Championship by eight shots in August.

The Tour Championship victory also moved Scheffler to $130,390,661 in official PGA Tour career earnings, taking him above Tiger Woods on the all-time money list.

Scott stressed that even the $10 million prize at East Lake did not change Scheffler’s attitude.

“The $10m doesn’t matter to that guy.

And you know, if we were in the pool playing volleyball, he would want to beat you just as bad as he wants to beat you at the FedEx Cup.

You know, that’s the essence of who Scottie is and that’s what he loves.

So I think partially part of his superpower is that the money doesn’t distract him.”

Scheffler’s decision to remain on the PGA Tour also looks interesting now because LIV Golf is going through a very uncertain period.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is ending its financial backing after the 2026 season, while reports have suggested that LIV is preparing for the possibility of bankruptcy as it searches for new investment.

The league is still planning a different model for 2027, but there remain many questions about which players will stay and what its tournaments will look like.

There is already talk that names such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau could return to the place where it all started, the PGA Tour. On the other hand, many are asking whether the leaders of the strongest tour in the world would be open to their return and what consequences the Spaniard and the American might face.

Judging by the latest reports, Bryson still sees his future in the controversial league, but it is difficult to predict what the future really holds with so many rapid changes taking place.
