Rory McIlroy spoke to the media before the final round, answering the question of whether Jack Nicklaus had given him any advice recently. The 37-year-old points out that this tournament is extremely difficult to play, but that he has a strong desire to triumph at Muirfield Village.

He stressed that he has a great relationship with Jack Nicklaus, recalling their first meeting.

“I’d love to win here,“ McIlroy said.

“It’s an iconic tournament. I watched Tiger so many times when I was a kid, you know, walk up that hill and shake Jack’s hand and get the trophy.

It’s a puzzle I haven’t quite figured out yet. It’s a tough course. I feel like every aspect of your game needs to be on.

And the last few years I’ve played here, I’ve played okay, but it just hasn’t quite clicked for me.

So, yeah, I would love to win here. I’d love to walk up that 18th hill and get that handshake from Jack.

Jack and I have a wonderful relationship. We met each other in February, 2009, for the first time, in the parking lot of the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens.

I feel so fortunate that I get to see Jack a lot at the Bears Club, where I practice, where I live.”

McIlroy said he was having lunch with Shane a few weeks ago when Jack came over and sat down at the table, noting how rare it is to experience such a moment.

Rory emphasized that having arguably the greatest golfer of all time around you is a special experience for him, and that Jack often gives him advice on how to play more ‘cut’ shots, especially on faster and more challenging greens, to help the ball land more softly

The Northern Irishman added that it was incredible for him to have the opportunity to learn directly from Nicklaus and that Jack said nice things about him at this year’s Champion’s Dinner in Augusta.

In the end, he emphasized that he is truly grateful and that it means a lot to him to have the opportunity to get to know Jack, Barbara and their entire family better.

The Muirfield Village

Jack Nicklaus designed Muirfield Village Golf Club, located in Dublin, Ohio. The course opened in 1974 and was designed by Nicklaus with the help of architect Desmond Muirhead. It is named after Muirfield, Scotland, where Nicklaus won his first Open Championship in 1966.

The Memorial tournament, also founded by Nicklaus himself, has been played on this course every year since 1976. The course is unique in that it was built with raised areas for spectators, and Nicklaus himself has renovated it several times over the years and adapted it to the modern game. The legendary golfer himself won this tournament twice, in 1977 and 1984.

Tiger Woods is the most successful player in the history of The Memorial Tournament with as many as five titles. Woods won in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2009 and 2012, and is also the only golfer to win this tournament three times in a row.

Behind him on the list of multiple winners is Kenny Perry with three wins (1991, 2003, 2008). Scottie Scheffler (2024, 2025), Patrick Cantlay (2019, 2021), tournament founder Jack Nicklaus (1977, 1984), Tom Watson (1979, 1996), Greg Norman (1990, 1995) and Hale Irwin (1983, 1985) each have two trophies in this prestigious competition.
