The PGA TOUR Board of Directors approved a restructuring that will divide its tournaments into two categories starting in 2028.

The new model is based on meritocracy, where players move between the two series—the PGA TOUR Championship Series and the PGA TOUR Challenger Series—through a formalized promotion and relegation structure, so that the best players compete more against each other, according to Brian Rolapp, the commissioner of the world’s premier golf tour.

In the new system, the Championship Series will feature 23 or 24 events, including The Players Championship, the four majors, the international team tournaments (Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup), and the Olympic tournament when it coincides with the Games. The season will run approximately from February, after the Super Bowl, to August.

It has already confirmed 10 of the 15  Championship Series regular season events scheduled for 2028. The remaining events will be filled with existing venues or new cities under consideration, including Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Each tournament will feature purses of at least $20 million for 120 players, who will qualify based solely on merit. There will be a cut to the top 65.

In addition, Championship Series will also feature a revamped postseason, including the introduction of match play, with a new-format TOUR Championship played on a rotation of prestigious courses, many of which will be used for the PGA TOUR’s first time. The top players in this category will also be eligible for a limited series of high-level international events, to be played in the fall and organized in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the strategic alliance between the two organizations.

As the primary pathway to the Championship Series, the Challenger Series will offer a schedule of at least 20 events with prize money of at least $4 million, where players will seek to earn coveted promotions. These events will be played at prestigious courses that have traditionally hosted tournaments. They will feature approximately 144 players, played on the same dates as the PGA TOUR Championship Series, although there is a possibility of reducing the number of participants due to restrictions such as insufficient daylight. There will also be a cut to 65.

Approximately seven Challenger Series events will be played during the PChampionship Series off-season, with greater consequences, benefits, and visibility. PGA TOUR Championship Series players will not be eligible to participate in Challenger Series events.

The key to the combined operation of both series lies in the possibility of clear promotions and relegations. At least the top 90 ranked players (out of a total of approximately 130 players on the PGA TOUR Championship) will be exempt from the following season, while those who fail to maintain their membership could be relegated to the Challenger Series. Similarly, a minimum of 20 players from the Challenger Series will be promoted to the Championship Series for the following season.

Challenger Series players will have two opportunities to immediately be promoted to the Championship Series: by winning several Challenger Series tournaments in the same season and by winning a major championship. There will also be a last chance series, consisting of four to six events to be played in the fall, where a limited number of spots will be available on the PGA TOUR Championship Series for the following season, as players look to improve or maintain their status.
