Patrick Reed made headlines when he left LIV Golf where he had been playing since 2022.

The renowned golfer decided to return to traditional golf and is currently playing on the DP World Tour as a lifetime honorary member. He can officially return to the PGA Tour as a full member starting in 2027, while gaining the right to compete as a non-member in August 2026.

Among many, Brooks Koepka pointed out that he had mixed emotions, unsure whether fans, as well as players, would react positively to his return.

Speaking to Golf Channel, Patrick Reed admitted that the opinions of PGA Tour players matter to him, stating that he wanted to do things the right way by serving his suspension and earning his spot back.

“It’s always important. I felt like when I really looked at it and sat down and made the decision for what I thought was best for myself and my family to be able to come back and play on the PGA Tour, I wanted to do it the right way.

Not just because of the membership but also because of the players. Coming back and making sure that I did my time in sitting out and coming back and earning my spot out here, rather than just coming back and be given a spot.

I feel like, because of that and coming back the right way it kind of seems like not only the players but also the people who are part of the PGA Tour are happy to have me back.” he said, as quoted by HITC.

His departure shocked the public, just like the departures of many other PGA Tour players who were significant figures at the time. The famous golfer spoke before the US Open about why he took longer breaks after winning on the DP World Tour and being competitive at the Masters.

The experienced golfer stressed the importance of his family, saying that he enjoys spending time with them and that this time he had a slightly different approach. However, Reed stressed that there will be an intense period after the US Open and that he was already prepared for it earlier.

“I think the biggest thing for me is that it’s allowed me some time with the family and time to work and prepare for the majors.

In the past, I have come into majors play ready, because of playing events leading into it, but this time and this year feels like the first time I have actually been able to work on the game and fundamentally get the swing where I wanted it. It’s a whole different approach.

But I knew coming in after making the decision to try and come back to the PGA Tour, I knew at that point, after spacing out the schedule, that I would be having time off after Augusta and after the PGA. But I knew once the US Open it would be hitting the ground running. I will be back to my usual self, playing a lot.” he continued.

What actually happened?

American Patrick Reed has officially announced his return to the PGA Tour in January 2026, after deciding not to renew his contract with the rival LIV Golf League. So far, in his rich PGA Tour career, he has played a total of 280 tournaments, where he achieved 9 victories and made 223 cuts.

Reed’s contract with LIV Golf expired at the end of 2025. He decided not to sign a new contract, stressing that he is a «traditionalist at heart», that he misses the old competition format and the rush of adrenaline when he fights in traditional tournaments, but also that he wants to spend more time with his family due to a reduction in long-distance travel.

Because he voluntarily resigned from the PGA Tour in 2022 before breaking any official rules, he avoided a permanent ban. However, for playing in «unauthorized tournaments» (LIV), he must serve a one-year suspension that expires on August 25, 2026. After that date, he becomes eligible to compete in FedExCup Fall tournaments as a non-member.

Unlike Brooks Koepka, who returned immediately through the newly created Returning Member Program (reserved only for winners of Major tournaments from 2022 onwards), Reed did not meet this requirement and had to go through a more difficult path. As part of the return conditions, Reed is ineligible to participate in the Player Equity Program until 2030.

As he waits for late summer and his return to America, Reed is dominating the European DP World Tour. At the beginning of 2026, he achieved great results.
