Johnson Wagner, a well-known golf analyst and former PGA Tour player, reacted to the changes taking place within LIV Golf for several weeks.

The latest reports suggest that LIV Golf could collapse by the end of this year, when the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) is expected to withdraw its financial backing.

It seems that most LIV golfers are thinking about their future, being unsure if this project will survive in the long term or if it will collapse. 

According to Johnson Wagner, a LIV Golf player close to him has confirmed that he is trying to secure a return to the PGA Tour, amid doubts about the future of LIV Golf.

Johnson Wagner was asked during a guest appearance on CBS whether LIV Golf will survive.

A well-known analyst, but also a former golfer, points out that there are few companies that would be willing to invest such a huge amount of money in LIV Golf.

Wagner reacts

Wagner stresses that LIV Golfers will hardly agree to smaller financial offers.

This situation is quite worrying for the leaders of LIV Golf, who really have to find quick and effective solutions if they want to keep this project in the long term.

When asked if he sees LIV operating next year, he said:

«I don’t. They’re looking for $300 million to go forward for next year. The way they’ve currently been running that tour with the purses, $300 million is just scratching the surface. I don’t know what company, and they’re trying to break it up into $50 million investments with different companies, I don’t know what company could possibly see a return on their investment with that. It would just be somebody else throwing money away just to keep it going,” he said.

Also, the only way that model works is by reducing purses. And when these players signed with LIV, they signed to play $20, $25 million purses, and I think there’d be absolute revolt. I don’t know how many players have re-signed. But this year, I know there’s a lot of contracts up, and I’m sure players are looking for a way out.

I spoke to a LIV player who lives in my hometown of Charlotte the other day, and he is trying to make his way back to the PGA Tour. I think that tour is absolutely going to crumble in August. It’ll be done.” Wagner concluded.
