Ian Poulter officially joined LIV Golf in June 2022, while he made his senior tournament debut at the U.S. Senior Open at the end of June and beginning of July 2026, after he celebrated his 50th birthday in January and gained the right to perform.
Fans and the media accused him of choosing «money over tradition». Poulter later admitted that he was going through difficult periods and that due to stress and insults on social media, he escaped into overeating.
The PGA Tour and DP World Tour immediately suspended him. Due to fines and damaged relationships, he was forced to give up his membership in the European Tour in May 2023, permanently losing his chance to ever captain Europe at the prestigious Ryder Cup.

In order to calm tensions and open the door for his future on the senior tours (PGA Tour Champions), in June 2026 Poulter finally paid all the accumulated financial penalties imposed on him by the DP World Tour for going to LIV.
Although there was doubt as to how former rivals and teammates from the Ryder Cup would welcome him because they had not played together for three years, the reactions in the end were very positive.
It was to be expected that Ian would have a small amount of caution and uncertainty about the reception of his rivals, considering that many of them were outraged by the moves not only by him, but also by other PGA Tour players who decided to join the LIV Golf project.
Darren Clark’s reaction after seeing Ian Poulter
Darren Clarke, a 57-year-old Northern Irish golfer, had a positive reaction after seeing Ian Poulter at the US Senior Open. Ian turned 50 in January this year, and his performances at LIV Golf were really promising.
Poulter hopes to be a dominant figure on the Senior Tour, although he is aware that he has many tough opponents who play at a top level even in their late playing years.

Ian revealed an emotional message he received from Darren Clarke in an interview with the media. He said that he had not seen the Northern Irishman for six years, although they have many fond memories together.
The former LIV golfer also spoke to some of his former rivals and colleagues, saying that it is a really nice feeling to be welcomed like that.
The experienced golfer enjoyed himself on the golf courses, giving his best and hoping to record top results in the coming period.
“It’s been awesome. Darren caught me before I teed off today, was in exactly the same outfit, red and white. He said, ‘I’ve missed you. It’s been great having you here for a week’. I haven’t seen Darren for probably six years, and obviously we played so much golf together, Ryder Cups, and we have so many amazing memories,” he said.
“To play with Miguel, who I also played Ryder Cups with, and just chatting with everybody that you haven’t seen in so long, it’s great, sort of a reunion type of deal.
Playing with Jamie was great today, as well. It’s been cool. It’s nice to not feel like you’re 50 yards or 40 yards behind people. To come out and play a slightly short golf course, it was really fun.” he said.
In that period, the leaders of the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, with the help of lucrative financial funds, tried to attract both younger and experienced figures of this sport. Although they hoped that with a significant financial injection, they would be able to bring all the top names from the PGA Tour, many of those who put tradition as a priority remained part of the PGA Tour.

LIV Golf’s future
The future of the LIV Golf League is currently in great question after the Saudi Arabian State Investment Fund (PIF) officially confirmed that it is completely suspending the financing of the league at the end of this season. The Saudis made the decision to pull out because the costs, which have exceeded $5 billion from 2022, no longer fit their new economic strategy.
League CEO Scott O’Neil is currently trying to save the project through the so-called «LIV 2.0» plan, in which he is frantically looking for new investors willing to invest between $250 and $300 million by September 1 so that the league can survive and continue the competition in 2027.
The league launched a restructuring of its operations, with players and team captains, such as Bryson DeChambeau, given back much of their commercial rights to incentivize them to help attract private capital themselves.
