Ian Poulter officially joined LIV Golf in June 2022 for the inaugural tournament at the Centurion Club near London.

The 50-year-old shared his emotions after playing against his former rivals.

The English golfer claims he hadn’t seen many of them for years, saying it’s incredible to play against them. Playing in the Senior Open brings back memories of an earlier period when he had clashes with some of the now older golfers.

“It’s special, like just reminiscing with the guys today on the course. We’ve played Ryder Cups together. We’ve done an awful lot of rounds together through the years. I haven’t seen the guys for a number of years, and they’ve had a great kind of 50-plus kind of stretch.

Miguel [Angel Jimenez] is 62 and played incredible out here. He’s won so many tournaments. Darren [Clarke] 57 and coming off a win a couple of weeks ago.

It’s great to play with the guys. It’s great to reminisce. It’s funny, I don’t feel 50, but I am 50. So it’s one of those. It’s been a great couple of days, and hopefully I can have a run this weekend.» he said, as quoted by HITC.

Speaking about the level of play on the Champions Tour, Ian Poulter said he was aware it was no easy competition, saying there was a reason these were guys who had done great things in golf. 

The Englishman noted that most of them enjoy the Champions Tour, golf and majors like this, believing that this is exactly the mindset you should have when you turn 50.

“Listen, these guys; I for one second didn’t think I was coming here to an easy competition. There’s a reason why these guys have done what they’ve done in the game, and they play week in and week out out here, and that’s because they were the very best players in the world for a long time. You don’t lose that when you turn 50.

These guys have transitioned, and they’re enjoying obviously playing Champions Tour golf and obviously playing majors like these and having an enjoyable time, and so you should once you turn 50.” he concluded.

Ian Poulter’s career

Ian Poulter achieved 17 victories in golf and was the fifth player in the world. He became an icon of the Ryder Cup, bringing Europe five titles without defeat in individual matches.

He won two elite WGC tournaments and finished second at the Open Championship in 2008. Ian Poulter won the prestigious British BAFTA award for rising star in acting. He had notable roles in The Revenant, The Maze Runner and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the series Dopesick.

Having opened a new chapter in his career, the Englishman is aware that he will no longer be in the public spotlight, although such tournaments are of interest to many.

He now has an interesting and exciting period of life ahead of him, and Ian Poulter hopes that he can be just as successful in the new phase of his career, hoping to achieve successes already this year.
