Viktor Hovland completed a spirited comeback to win the Travelers Championship on the first playoff hole Monday morning. The Norwegian made a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th, while Scottie Scheffler missed a 3-foot birdie putt.

Scheffler forced the playoff by making a 7-foot par putt on the final hole Sunday evening, in the dark. The playoff, postponed due to darkness after a 90-minute interruption due to a thunderstorm, was the first time a PGA Tour tournament ended the next day since last year’s The Players Championship.

On the 18th, both hit the fairway. Scheffler attacked the green, stopping the ball about 3 feet away, sparking cheers from approximately 3,000 spectators. Hovland responded with a 7-foot approach, demonstrating the same determination he had shown in the second half of the final round, when he had recovered from a two-shot deficit. The downhill putt, with a marked left-to-right deviation, touched the inside right edge and went in.

The atmosphere in the playoff was lively, with a group of Norwegian fans (in Boston for the World Cup) wearing national team jerseys chanting «Hov-land!» On the other side, American fans responded with Scheffler chants. It was a scene reminiscent of last year’s Ryder Cup duel between Keegan Bradley and Tommy Fleetwood.

Scheffler and Hovland both finished at 21-under par. Collin Morikawa closed with a superb 61 and finished third at 20 points, while Matt Fitzpatrick was fourth and Wyndham Clark fifth.

Hovland started with a one-shot lead over Scheffler, but was two shots behind when the rain interrupted play. Upon returning, he birdied from about 13 feet out of the rough near the green on the 14th, while Scheffler had to save par from two feet away. On the reachable par-4 on the 15th, Scheffler hit a pitch that went over the green, saved par again, and the two were back on par.

Hovland had a bumpy first half of the round, but found his rhythm with three consecutive birdies. The rain interruption helped him reset: «I hit some good shots and some bad shots; I couldn’t find my rhythm. Getting completely out of the way and resetting was good for me,» he commented.

Morikawa, who started nine shots off the lead, finished with a sand shot on the 18th for his ninth birdie of the day: «I told my wife this morning: let’s try to shoot 61 to finish these three weeks strong. Sometimes the things you wish for come true.»

Hovland thus took home a major victory that relaunched his season, while Scheffler once again proved he’s a tough opponent to beat. The 2026 Travelers Championship concluded with a thrilling finale worthy of a Major.
