LIV Golf has created one of the biggest divisions in professional golf over the last few years, and Henrik Stenson was one of the players who decided to become part of the new project from an early stage.

The Swede joined LIV in 2022, a decision that had a huge consequence for him personally. Stenson was removed as European Ryder Cup captain after choosing to join the breakaway league.

Still, the former Open champion never hid that he believed he made the right decision for himself at that moment.

Four years later, the situation around LIV Golf looks very different. The league is preparing for another important change, its financial structure is changing and there are still questions about which players will remain part of it.

Stenson, who is no longer competing regularly on LIV after being relegated following the 2025 season, admits that even he does not know exactly what happens from here.

Looking back, the 50-year-old described the last few years as “turbulent”, although he believes LIV also brought some positive changes to professional golf.

“It’s brought top-class golf to areas that have been starved of that and had huge receptions and success,” Stenson told the South China Morning Post.

“It’s definitely changed the game.”

Stenson understands why golf fans were frustrated

LIV attracted many of the biggest names in the sport when it arrived in 2022.

Players such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith and later Jon Rahm all joined the league.

The huge contracts and prize money immediately created attention, but the moves also created a difficult situation for golf fans.

Some of the best players were suddenly competing on different tours and could mainly meet at the four major championships.

Stenson understands why many supporters did not enjoy that part of LIV’s arrival.

“I can fully understand that some of the golf fans felt like it got split up, and some of their favourite players went left, and some of the players went right, and they didn’t get to see everyone compete and so on,” he said.

The experienced Swede still believes LIV helped bring professional golf to new markets and forced the rest of the sport to react.

However, his own LIV story was not always simple.

Stenson won his first LIV event shortly after joining the league, but he was unable to maintain that level over the following seasons. He eventually lost his place after the 2025 campaign.

His decision to join also ended his chance to captain Europe at the Ryder Cup. Luke Donald replaced him and later led Europe to Ryder Cup victories, making Stenson’s choice an even bigger talking point.

The Swede does not appear interested in changing the decision now.

He believes players made different choices depending on their own situations and the opportunities in front of them.

“We all did what we felt was right at the time and tried our best,” Stenson said.

LIV Golf is entering another uncertain chapter

The bigger question now is not about what happened in 2022, but what LIV Golf will look like in 2027 and beyond.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund decided to end its financial backing of the league after the 2026 season, forcing LIV to search for new investors and change its business model.

CEO Scott O’Neil has announced that LIV has an agreement with a new lead investor, although the identity of that investor has not yet been made public.

The plan for what has been described as LIV Golf 2.0 is also expected to be different from the original version of the league.

A reduced schedule of 10 tournaments has been discussed, while players could become majority equity holders in the league.

For Stenson, predicting whether all of that will work is impossible.

“I don’t have the answers to what’s going to happen next,” he admitted.

“I will follow it like everyone else, but it was certainly a shake-up, and a shake-up comes with good things and some bad things.”

That may be one of the simplest descriptions of LIV Golf’s impact since it appeared four years ago.

The league divided players and fans, changed the financial side of professional golf and created new opportunities in countries that previously did not regularly host the biggest names.

Stenson also hopes players will eventually be remembered for more than which side of the golf divide they chose.

“Golf is a great game in that sense,” he said. “I think it’s probably one of the best, if not the best, sports in giving back to charities and different initiatives all around the world.

“That doesn’t matter if you’re playing on LIV, you’re playing on the PGA Tour or on the DP World Tour.

So, we are all great at giving back. I think that’s the thing. We should all take pride in that and be remembered for it.”

Whether LIV survives in something close to its current form remains uncertain, but Stenson believes there is little doubt that the league already changed professional golf.
