In a conversation with the media, the Australian pointed out that he currently has no plans to return to the PGA Tour, but he is aware that the future of his career in LIV Golf is still uncertain.

The experienced Australian hopes the controversial league will survive in the long term, believing there is great chemistry and camaraderie among the players. He stressed that he would be very sorry if the project disappeared.

“I’m a positive guy, so I’ve made no effort to go seek anything else,” he said.

“I don’t really understand what is going to happen. I think it’s all up in the air. I know that the LIV team is working hard to get us to play next year and working hard for us. They do a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

I want it to work, really, to be honest. It’s great fun out here. The team that we’ve got, I feel like we make each other better, better people and better golfers as well. Yeah, I’d hate to see it go away. We’ll see what happens.

Like I said before, we’ve got a player meeting this afternoon. I’m sure we’ll get some more info. But at the moment we’re preparing to keep playing and keep the team alive.”

When asked if he would be interested in returning to the PGA Tour, the 32-year-old replied:

“I mean, if it was the only option, I think that’s where everyone would want to be for sure, 100 percent. It would go back to old times,” he said.

Smith pointed out that the players have been instructed to prepare as if the final tournament will take place, which is why they currently expect the event to be played anyway.

Although he admits that he is not completely sure of the final outcome, he recalled that last year in Detroit they had a great experience, with a great venue, atmosphere and great support from the crowd. He added that he would be disappointed if the tournament was canceled in the end.

The Australian reiterated that the team is currently counting on taking part and hopes that it will actually happen. He emphasized that after the players’ meeting, he will probably have more information, but that at the moment he can only say that they are preparing for the competition.

The future of LIV Golf

The future of LIV Golf is at a major turning point, and the opinions of fans, experts and analysts are divided between the possibility of a complete shutdown and a major restructuring of this project. 

The main reason for the current crisis is the uncertainty about future funding, after information emerged that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has invested billions of dollars in the development of the league, could stop being the main financier after the end of the 2026 season.

Analysts currently see several possible scenarios for the future of LIV Golf. One of them is the so-called «LIV 2.0», that is, the restructuring of the league that would allow it to continue operating with a completely different financial model. 

According to reports published by The New York Post, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil is trying to secure $250 million to $350 million from private investment funds so that the league can continue to function during 2027.

However, experts warn that such a scenario would probably bring big changes. The league would have to cut costs, which could mean lower prize pools, changes to player contracts and a different approach to organizing tournaments.

Another possible outcome is the complete collapse of the project. Some experts in the field of sports marketing believe that the long-term survival of LIV Golf is very difficult because the league has not yet managed to develop a sufficiently strong commercial and sponsorship model.
