Englishman Tom Osborne, one of the leading favorites going into the tournament, dominated. He began his run at the top with a 62 (-9) and then finished with a 268 (62, 66, 69, 71, -16), holding off a comeback attempt by compatriot Eliot Baker in the final round, who finished second with a 270 (-14) after finishing third last year.

In third place with a score of 275 (-9) was Hungary’s Bence Bertenyi, followed by four other Brits: Oliver Lewis-Perkins, fourth with a score of 276 (-8), Harley Smith, Jack Diment, and Jake Sowden, fifth with a score of 277 (-7) along with Dutchman Melvin Muller.

Of the other Italians, Biagio Andrea Gagliardi (Olgiata), defending his title, finished 31st with a 283 (72 67 72 72, -1), Carlo Melgrati (Franciacorta) finished 37th with a 284 (71 71 73 69, par), Giovanni Bernardi (Margara) finished 54th with a 288 (72 69 73 74, +4), and Francesco Petrangeli (Roma Acquasanta) finished 66th with a 296 (68 73 75 80, +12). Carlo Roman (Montecchia Golf) failed to make the cut after 36 holes, finishing 67th with a 145 (71 74, +3), out by one stroke. Giorgio Grillo, coach of the Under 18 team, and coach Marco Soffietti were among the Italian team members.

The event was first held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport in 1947 under the name of the English Amateur International Trophy. The following year, the trophy was donated by Lord Brabazon of Tara, a pioneering aviator, Member of Parliament, accomplished golfer, and captain of the R&A in 1952–53. Thus, the event became known as the Brabazon Trophy, although its official name, the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, was introduced in 1957. Among the many winners in the roll of honour are the Scotsman Sandy Lyle (1975, 1977), two major titles and winner of two Italian Opens (1984, 1992), the South African Charl Schwartzel (2002), winner of the 2011 Masters, now a member of LIV Golf, the Englishmen Michael Bonallack, record number of titles with four (1964, 1968, 1969, 1971), Peter Baker (1985) and Peter Townsend (1966) and the Northern Irishman Ronan Rafferty (1980).
