The legend of Severiano Ballesteros, the greatest Spanish golfer of all time and one of the most iconic in Europe, began to take shape on August 8, 1976, when, at 19 years old, he won his first professional title at the Dutch Open.

«Seve,» born in Pedreña (Cantabria) on April 9, 1957, into a humble family, was involved in the sport from childhood, a sport that would eventually bring him fame and an enviable record, as well as popularize golf in Spain.

His uncle Ramón Sota had been a national champion, and he had been a caddie at the Pedreña course since he was nine. Four years later, he obtained his official license to play, and in 1974, he made his professional debut. That same year, he won the Spanish Under-25 Open Championship.

The following year, he successfully defended this title and gained international recognition with his third-place finish at the prestigious Lancôme tournament in Paris, which propelled him to 26th in the world rankings.

His first professional title was just around the corner.

It was at the Kennemer coastal course in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, where Seve Ballesteros opened his account and established himself as a rising star who would eventually become the player with the most wins (50) on the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour.

This occurred just a month after the young man from Pedreña, previously unknown, burst onto the scene when he finished second, tied with the legendary Jack Nicklaus, at the U.S. Open, his first major, played at Royal Birkdale, the same course that hosted the most recent edition two weeks ago.

Ballesteros, who turned professional in March 1974, shortly before his 16th birthday, held the lead for the first three rounds, but lost to American John Miller on the final day.

After narrowly missing out on victory in his first major and finishing third in the Scandinavian Masters and the Swiss Open, he climbed to the top of the podium in the Netherlands, eight strokes ahead of the runner-up, Englishman Howard Clark.

This was the first of fifty victories he would achieve, culminating in his final title in May 1995, at the age of 38, at the Spanish Open in Madrid, where he had made his European Tour debut in 1974.

In 1976, he won his first European Tour title, a feat he would repeat five more times, and capped it off with the World Cup victory alongside Manuel Piñero in the United States.

Seve’s career, who died on May 7, 2011, would be adorned with the five ‘majors’ he won, three British Opens (1979, 1984 and 1988) and two Masters of Augusta (1980 and 1983), in addition to three Ryder Cups (1985, 1987 and 1995).
