John Catlin captured his fifth National Open title by winning the English Open supported by HotelPlanner, a HotelPlanner Tour event held at Vale Golf Club.

The American overtook Norway’s Kristian Krogh Johannessen on the seventh playoff hole, after both had held par in the first six extra holes. Catlin settled the match with a birdie, earning him his first victory on the tour.

The two protagonists finished the 72 regulation holes 18 points behind. Catlin closed with a 67 in the final round (pars: 68, 66, 69, 67), while Johannessen responded with an excellent 66 (70, 69, 65, 66), rounded out with two birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.

Swede Per Längfors and England’s Barclay Brown finished tied for third at 13 points. Close behind, 12 points behind, were German Alexander Knappe and American Jhared Hack.

There were no Italian players in the competition.

With this win, Catlin climbs 231 spots on the Road to Mallorca, moving up to 18th place. This is a particularly significant result for the 35-year-old American, who adds the English Open to an already impressive list of national Opens (Austria, Ireland, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia). The tournament is back on the calendar after 24 years, and Catlin joins a prestigious list of winners that includes names such as Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, and Darren Clarke.

The top three remains unchanged: MJ Daffue leads ahead of Spaniard Pablo Ereno and England’s Will Enefer. Johannessen, with his best performance of the season, climbs 94 spots to 22nd place.
