Tiger Woods was released from jail Friday night after posting bail, following his arrest as a suspect in a minor accident on Jupiter Island, Florida.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods appeared impaired at the scene of the accident. He tested negative for alcohol but refused to submit to a urine test and was arrested for DUI (driving under the influence of drugs) and refusing to submit to a legal drug test.
The accident occurred in Woods’ hometown around 2 p.m. local time.
Woods was taken to the county jail in Stuart, Florida, an hour after the accident and released on bail eight hours later, the minimum allowed under state law, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.
At a press conference, Budensiek stated that Woods’ Land Rover unsuccessfully attempted to pass a truck carrying a pressure washer on its trailer. The car struck the trailer, overturned, and continued down the road, according to the sheriff.
Neither Woods nor the truck driver was injured, the sheriff reported.
Tiger Woods, statements
«This could have been much worse,» Budensiek said.
Deputies who responded to the scene determined that Woods appeared to be under the influence of some substance, according to Budensiek, who added that alcohol is not believed to have been involved.
Budensiek added, «He’s being cooperative, but he didn’t want to incriminate himself, so he was cautious about what he said and what he didn’t say.»
Woods, 50, was involved in a single-vehicle car accident in Southern California in February 2021, which resulted in multiple leg fractures. No charges were filed. The accident impacted Woods’ golf career, and he has since participated in very few PGA Tour events.
In May 2017, Woods was also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Jupiter Island and ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He received a one-year suspended sentence, along with a $250 fine and 50 hours of community service.
Woods is not expected to participate in next month’s Masters Tournament, but he had reportedly signed up to play in the U.S. Senior Open.
Woods, a 15-time PGA Tour major winner, had recently hinted at playing on the Champions Tour now that he has turned 50.
«I’m trying. Let’s put it that way. The disc replacement has been one thing… I’ve had my spine fused and now I’ve had a disc replaced, so it’s a challenge,» Woods said at last month’s Genesis Invitational near Los Angeles when asked about a possible return to play.
«And now, I’ve entered a new decade, so that number is starting to sink in and makes you think about the opportunity to be able to play in a golf cart. That’s something that, like I’ve said, I won’t be doing here (on the PGA Tour) because I don’t believe in it. But on the Champions Tour, it’s certainly an opportunity.»
