After the second round at the Truist Championship, Rory McIlroy addressed the comments regarding a potential return of LIV golfers to the PGA Tour, saying that the return of such players would be a big deal for everyone.

«It’s a question if [players] do want to come back,» said McIlroy, as quoted by BBC.

«But if it is a scenario where they have the option to come back and play on the traditional tours, you know, I think [PGA Tour chief executive] Brian Rolapp has said anything that makes this tour stronger, anything that makes the DP World Tour stronger, I think everyone should be open to that.

That’s just good business practice.»

The Northern Irish golfer has been one of the strongest critics of LIV Golf for years, but added that more than a year ago he decided to tone down his stance, stressing that conflicts in the world of golf are not good and that everyone should have the freedom to choose.

Rory McIlroy emphasized that he never saw himself as a member of LIV Golf, but on the other hand, he is not sure that the controversial league will disappear.

«I think everyone sort of knows my views on LIV and where it stands in the game of golf. I don’t think I need to rehash any of that.

It’s never been for me and, look, it doesn’t mean that LIV is going to go away. They’re going to go and try and find alternative investment, whatever that may look like.»

Rory McIlroy claims that his criticism came from seeing things from his own perspective, rather than considering other points of view.

Still, he stresses that he doesn’t want to judge anyone who doesn’t want to play on the PGA Tour. 

The Northern Irish golfer notes that if the player wants to play the DP World Tour and if it would really strengthen the European tour, he would be happy because it is ultimately his home tour.

However, he claims that the PGA Tour is the ideal place for golfers to develop and reach the top level.
