Rory McIlroy had the opportunity to watch the Augusta National Women’s Amateur tournament, and after the tournament he talked about his impressions of the Masters and the atmosphere. He shared his plans for the coming days, saying he would play golf with his dad at Augusta National, enjoying the experience, while knowing how meaningful it would be for both of them.

“Yeah, it’s amazing,” McIlroy said, as quoted by the Independent. 

“The atmosphere is incredible. Coming back here after doing what I did last year, it’s nice to spend a little extra time.

I get to play golf here with my dad tomorrow, which will be a really cool experience for both of us. And, I’ve watched the ANWA every year since it was started, and I feel like it’s a really cool kick-off to the entire week here at Augusta National.”

The 36-year-old, although he has ambitions to win this tournament, does not want to look too far into the future, aware that he must be focused and not think too much about winning. 

Rory is looking forward to playing with his dad on Tuesday night as well, but after that comes his most serious challenge. McIlroy is aware that if he wins the Masters again, it would truly be an incredible feat that would be talked about for years to come.

“Yeah, look, I think the first few days, it is all about enjoying — I don’t want to say basking in but enjoying what I did last year,” he said.

“Enjoying the perks, being able to play with my dad tomorrow, and being able to go to the dinner on Tuesday night.

But I think once Tuesday night’s over, you know, serious business begins. Obviously, we’re going to have fun at the Par-3 with Poppy and Erica and all that.

But I think there will hopefully be a mind shift change on Wednesday where I’m really, like, just focused on the tournament and, trying to, trying to win another Masters.

Yeah, it’s a dream come true. I’ve gotten up here quite a bit over the last few weeks, and I know this is just my first year coming back and doing it all in the green jacket, but I’m pretty sure it won’t get old.”

Rory’s success

Golfer from Northern Ireland Rory McIlroy became only the sixth player in history to complete the career «grand slam», that is, to win all four «majors» by winning last year’s Masters in Augusta in the American state of Georgia.

McIlroy (35) reached triumph at Augusta in dramatic fashion by defeating the Englishman Justin Rose (44) in a playoff. After playing 72 holes, both players were 11 strokes under par, so the winner was decided on the 73rd hole, meaning they had to play the 18th hole on the course again.

After both McIlroy and Rose played their first two shots, Rose’s ball was two and a half meters from the hole, while McIlroy’s was just over half a meter. Rose had to take his third shot first, but he missed, leaving an open opportunity for McIlroy – which he did not miss.

By the way, McIlroy had a four-shot lead over his closest rivals with eight holes remaining in the “regular” competition, but he failed to keep his composure and lost all his lead with a few misses.

However, he had a chance to win without a playoff because on the last hole he was supposed to hit from a distance of one and a half meters, but the ball missed the hole and he had to achieve his great triumph the hard way.

For McIlroy, this is the fifth “major” in his career, and the first in 11 years. He has won the PGA Championships twice (2012, 2014) and the US Open (2011) and The Open (2014) once.

McIlroy is the first European to achieve a career «grand slam» in golf; before him, only four Americans had managed to do so: Jack Nicklaus, who holds the record with 18 «majors» he won from 1962 to 1986, and he celebrated at least three times in each; Tiger Woods, who won his 15 «majors» from 1997 to 2018 and also celebrated at least three times in each; Ben Hogan, winner of 9 «majors» from 1946 to 1953; Gene Sarazen, who won 7 «majors» from 1922 to 1935 and was the first winner of the Masters in Augusta, and thus the first to complete the «grand slam», and South African Gary Player, who won 9 «majors» from 1959 to 1978.
