The Northern Irish golfer points out that he had a good session which ultimately helped him make a good score.

“When we were in scoring, he said, ‘Why don’t we hit a few balls, try to straighten this out. I’ll get over there, do your media, and I’ll get over there.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.’

“I probably would have got to that conclusion anyway, but that little nudge from Harry, it was like, yeah, let’s go and hit some balls. Because you finish late, it would be easy to just get in your car, go home, have some dinner, just want to get to bed. But Harry was like, ‘Let’s go figure this out.’

“So I get on the range, and honestly, I had a really good session.”

In a press conference, Rory McIlroy explained the reason for his great play on the last day, but also for his poor play on Saturday.

“I just worked on neutralizing my ball flight. My swing was getting too in-to-out, my ball was going to right-to-left.

And when the path gets too much in-to-out, and you’re hitting partial shots, and the body stops, it just goes dead left like the shot I hit on 12 [on Saturday.]

I neutralized the ball flight. I just got my body working through impact more, and that was the feel I went with [on Sunday]. And I definitely hit the ball better. I hit my irons better, and I probably hit the driver better too. I hit more fairways.

But that practice session on Saturday night was key.”

Harry Diamond has previously been criticized by the media, but Rory McIlroy has often stood in his defense, saying that Harry is an important figure for him and a person who is of great help to him. 

Their partnership

Harry Diamond has been Rory McIlroy’s caddie since 2017, causing a lot of controversy when it was announced that he would continue the journey together with Rory McIlroy into the future. 

The relationship between Rory McIlroy and Harry Diamond is not only professional, but also friendly. The two met at Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland as young players with huge potential.

Harry Diamond also showed positive signs as a young golfer, winning some tournaments as an amateur. However, he left professional competitions to help Rory McIlroy and be an important figure for him. 

McIlroy’s victory brought a significant financial injection of as much as 3.3 million pounds, while Harry Diamond will earn around 330,000 pounds.

McIlroy and Harry Diamond celebrated together after the last victory, and McIlroy shared with the media how much he respects Diamond, stressing that he is like an older brother to him. 

The Northern Irish golfer revealed that the pair have known each other since the age of seven, saying they have endured many defeats, as well as the criticism Diamond has endured from people who know nothing about golf. McIlroy reminded that this victory is as much his as it is mine.

Rory McIlroy previously worked with JP Fitzgerald until 2017, when Harry Diamond became McIlroy’s new caddy. The pair won 13 titles together, although in the early stages both suffered huge criticism — McIlroy for hiring him and Diamond for his inexperience.

It will be interesting to see if their collaboration will be fruitful in the future.
