Brian Rolapp is the CEO of the PGA Tour.

Speaking on the Golf Channel podcast, Ryan Lavner said this will have a big impact on players.

We are going to have windows where players are not going to play consecutive weeks in a row.»

Lavner pointed out that a player like Matt Fitzpatrick deservedly takes a rest considering the excellent results in the previous weeks.

Lavner isn’t surprised that Rory McIlroy is taking a break, but he’s a little surprised that he didn’t show up at Doral.

He said that if this trend continues and the PGA Tour continues to expand its Signature Events, it could create even more serious problems.

“It is interesting that Matt Fitzpatrick won with his brother in New Orleans, won last week in Hilton Head, played well the week before that at The Masters, so him taking the week off should be no surprise whatsoever. The fact he was willing to play three in a row is a bit shocking.

It is no big surprise to see Rory take off back to back weeks. He clearly does not like Hilton Head as a stop.

I am a little surprised he did not show up at Doral. Simply because it’s close to home and it seems like that is the sort of the golf course he would like.»

Rolapp became CEO midway through last season, but he didn’t have much influence over this season’s schedule.

It remains to be seen how this situation will develop and what impact it will have on the PGA Tour going forward.

“After Doral you have the Truist Championship, which is a Signature Event, followed by the PGA Championship.

It does not let up. It is only going to get worse if this new reality comes into play. If Brian Rolapp gets his way and the PGA Tour schedule goes to that tier one and tier two structure, this is going to be a real problem.

We see it all the time in other sports, the NBA being a primary example here, and Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, still has not figured out an answer.

I think Brian Rolapp is going to have to start thinking long and hard about how he can make this version work.”

Significant changes in the world of golf

The PGA has made a lot of changes in the last few years, mostly due to the arrival of LIV Golf in the world of sport.

LIV Golf sparked real concern among PGA leaders, who felt at the time that the situation within the Tour could deteriorate significantly. 

The departure of some PGA stars raised fear and uncertainty about the future.

Looking at it from this perspective, it seems like the PGA executives made some top moves, but on the other hand, it seems that the fans have remained loyal to the PGA Tour, regardless of the money that LIV Golf has used to attract some of the biggest names.

A few years later, it seems that LIV Golf could even experience a collapse, given that PIF, the Saudi investment fund, could stop investing money in this league at the end of the season.

This could influence some former PGA players to try to return to the prestigious Tour. Their return could be very complicated and with a lot of question marks hanging over their heads, but we’ll see what the future holds.
