McIlroy reaffirmed his critical stance toward LIV, the league supported by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund since its inception in 2022, which has confirmed it will cease funding at the end of the season. This has generated confusion about whether the league will continue next season and what will happen to some of its stars, such as Spain’s Jon Rahm and the United States’ Bryson DeChambeau.

“It’s never been for me, and look, that doesn’t mean LIV is going to disappear. They’re going to go and try to find alternative investment, whatever that entails. But when one of the world’s richest sovereign wealth funds thinks you’re too expensive for them, that says something,” the Northern Irish golfer said after the second round of the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship in North Carolina.

The recent Masters champion appreciated that both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, the European Tour, have shown a willingness to bring LIV players back given the uncertainty surrounding their future, although he expressed doubts about how this could be done.

“There are going to be a lot of bridges to cross to get there, just because the guys over there (LIV) are under contract, and if they manage to keep it going and put together a schedule for next year, it looks like most of them will still be playing on LIV, in whatever form it takes. (…) I was probably too critical of the guys who left because I was looking at it from my perspective and maybe not from other perspectives. I’m not going to judge anyone for not wanting to play on the PGA Tour.”
