The 26-year-old Swede has emerged as one of golf’s biggest talents, but it seems Aberg still has plenty of room for improvement. The popular golfer was a guest on the ‘4play’ podcast, touched on various topics, and certainly the topic of greatest interest was LIV Golf’s interest in him.

The leaders of the controversial Saudi back tour have been trying to hire some famous names for years, and although they managed to some extent to attract notable names, Ludvig Åberg was not among them.

The Swedish golfer confirmed that he had offers when he was still in school, but he had a clear attitude from the beginning that such a project was not in his plans. 

Ludvig Åberg was focused on the PGA Tour, a traditional golf tour with a serious history. As a kid, he dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour one day, but some were motivated by money and decided to take a different path.

Ludvig Åberg notes that golf is a special sport that carries special emotions, and he seems to enjoy performing on the most prestigious tour.

“Yeah, I think so [LIV were interested]. I got some offers when I was still in school. But I was with [agent] Butler [Melnyk] at the time still, but I was pretty straightforward and honest from the start that I wasn’t really interested. I love the history of the game, so to me that just wasn’t in that lane. That wasn’t even an option,” he said.

“Obviously golf, there’s so many little stories to it. If you’re watching a tournament, there’s all these little stories about previous tournaments, or just making the cut on Friday, that’s a big deal. There’s so many different storylines you can follow. I think that’s what makes it cool.”

His next challenge will be the Masters, the most prestigious tournament in the world of golf. The 26-year-old is hoping to repeat the success. Fans remember his debut in 2020, when he finished second.

Whether the Swede can take another important step and finally win the Masters trophy remains to be seen. This prestigious tournament has been won by various big names throughout history.

The latest winner is Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irish golfer who made a real sensation last year by winning the coveted trophy.

McIlroy has been searching for a career Grand Slam for years, trying in vain to reach his goal. However, months before the Masters, he decided to change his mindset, focus differently and emphasize his own peace.

Rory McIlroy moved away from the media and the pressure that surrounded him for years, and managed to do a great feat. Åberg and other golfers could follow McIlroy’s example, try to distance themselves from their ambitions and just enjoy golf in this tournament. Although this sounds simple at first glance, it really requires a huge mental effort.

The Players Championship

Åberg has shown positive signs that he could return to form and be just as dominant. It was noticeable at the Players Championship, as young Swede dominated the first three rounds, holding a three-shot lead into the penultimate round.

However, the Swede seemed to lose focus and motivation in the final round, collapsing and finishing in T5 with -9. 

In an interview with the media, he could not hide his disappointment with the final round, saying that he would have liked to be a trophy winner like Cameron Young. According to him, the choice of driver was clearly not the right one, but besides that, he was not at his required level.

Åberg explained all his wishes and ambitions, but still failed to reach his goal.

«Obviously really disappointed. I would have loved to be standing where Cameron (Young) is standing right now,» he said.

«It got away from me quick there,» Aberg said. «Yeah, it was just poor swings. I felt like I’ve had that sort of 7-wood right miss a few times this week, on No. 4 especially twice, and it came up on 11 as well. Then tried to press a little bit on 12, hitting driver, where sometimes you can play 3-wood a little short of that bunker.»

Ludvig stresses that few things went well, but despite that, he wants to take the positive out of everything, saying that he is satisfied with the week. As a golfer who has been playing for years, Åberg is aware that such situations are quite common in the world of golf and that it is not always possible to play your best game.
