Rory McIlroy is one of those who often criticized LIV Golf, but not long after he softened his views by accepting that every golfer has the opportunity to make his choice.

According to Rory McIlroy, the collapse of LIV Golf was one of the options as recently as a few months ago. Rory admitted that he had a few friends that he was already in touch with.

 However, the Northern Irish golfer claims that most, both LIV golfers and their caddies, were surprised by this.

«It was always a possibility. I feel like a lot of us, ­including me, we almost knew before the [LIV] players did that this was going to happen.

I was hearing about this back in March, April time. I have friends over there.

One of my best friends, Ricky [McCormick], caddies for Tom McKibbin. I would talk to him all the time about what was going on.

I was saying to Ricky: ‘Have you guys heard any of this stuff?’ He was like: ‘No, everything seems OK over here.’

It just feels like the rug was pulled from under their feet and everyone was sort of blindsided by it. That’s the risk that those guys chose to take. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the air right now.»

Lee Westwood reacts

Lee Westwood is one of the golfers who reacted to Rory McIlroy’s statement, as well as the statements of others who put forward various theories related to LIV Golf and predict the future.

Lee Westwood pointed out that back in March he was skeptical about the future of LIV Golf, but certainly no one was sure what would happen.

«Everybody was guessing back in March, weren’t they? Me and a few others were the closest to it and you couldn’t say for certain,» Westwood said.

Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, claims that many factors influenced the Saudi investment fund’s decision to withdraw, but believes that one should look positively at the future of golf and not get too involved in any theories and speculations.

«I think there’s a lot of things gone into that. I think the war in the Middle East has not helped.

We’re at a point where it is what it is now. You have to move on. There’s no point in going into speculation and you’ve got to look forward.»

Lee Westwood admitted that it was shocking to hear the news that PIF had pulled out, but on the other hand, he hopes that the project can get back on its feet and ultimately have a bright future.

Lee Westwood expects LIV Golf executives to carefully consider all their options at the meetings and ultimately make the best decision.

If LIV Golf collapses, Lee Westwood claims he has several options, saying he is 53 years old and therefore has the opportunity to play in senior tournaments, but also has exemptions on the European Tour if he pays a fine.

The experienced golfer points out that he never really enjoyed playing on the PGA Tour, even though he won and performed very well in some tournaments there. Playing on the PGA Tour, according to him, never particularly motivated him, but it also seems that it no longer seems like an option for him.

«I’ve got plenty of options.

I’m 53 now, so there’s the senior tours and I’ve still got exemptions on the European tour if I chose to pay my fines.

I’ve never really enjoyed playing the PGA tour that much.

In 30 odd years of being a professional golfer, having won over there and finished high enough up to take my card, I’ve only taken my card for six of those years.

The two times I did win over there, I didn’t take my card then. So it’s not really playing on the PGA tour that’s ever driven me along. So that wouldn’t be an option that I would take,» he concluded.
