Tiger Woods appeared dazed and was arrested Friday at the scene of a crash in which he hit another vehicle and then rolled over in his Land Rover.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods was not hurt. He managed to get out through the passenger door of his vehicle. He is suspected of being under the influence of certain opiates.

The accident happened not far from where Woods lives on Jupiter Island.

Budensiek said Woods attempted to overtake a truck carrying a pressure washer on a two-lane road. The Land Rover swerved to avoid a collision as it overtook the truck, but clipped the rear of the truck’s trailer. Woods’ vehicle then rolled onto its driver’s side.

This is at least the third time Tiger has been involved in a car accident. The last time it happened was in February 2021, when his SUV skidded off a coastal road in Los Angeles at high speed, causing multiple leg injuries. Woods later said doctors were considering amputation.

Since that 2021 accident, he has played in 11 tournaments. He has completed all 72 holes four times, but has never been closer than 16 strokes behind the winner.

He was also arrested for driving under the influence in 2017, when police in south Florida found Woods asleep at the wheel of his car, which was awkwardly parked and had damage to the driver’s side. Tiger said at the time that he had taken the wrong combination of painkillers. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

An important figure in the world of golf, Jon Rahm, commented on the latest arrest of Tiger Woods. Just like most golfers, Rahm looked up to Woods as a kid and hoped to one day play on the big stage. 

The Spanish golfer revealed that he has not yet learned all the details about Tiger’s condition or the circumstances of the accident, although there is a contact through which he can get more information. Jon Rahm hopes that Tiger Woods will get the help he needs and that he will be able to return as the ‘comeback champion’.

“There’s a lot of players in this field that were very close to him and I haven’t had the time to talk to them. Quite frankly, I don’t know if this will be the week to do so,” said Rahm.

“They have enough going on this week with the Masters and a friend needing some help that I don’t know if it’s the right time.

All I can hope is that he gets the help that he can get and he can come back in a better position after that.

He is arguably the king of comebacks. If there’s somebody that has the mental strength to come back from an issue like that, it will be him.

(I’m) confident that he has enough people in Florida, enough golfers for sure, supporting him on that as well.”

Throughout his long career, Tiger has faced various incidents and injuries, so he knows well how to recover from problems. 

Rahm points out that Woods has a large circle of friends who will surely be of importance to him in the recovery process. 

Jon Rahm wasn’t the only golfer to react to Woods’ arrest – plenty of other golfers had mixed opinions.

Although Tiger Woods is a respected name in the world of golf, some are outraged and frustrated by his behavior, stressing that such an incident can tarnish the image of the sport.

Shortly after the incident, Tiger announced a temporary withdrawal from professional golf to focus on his treatment and recovery.

He has played sparingly in recent years, battling serious injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon. His last appearance on a PGA Tour event was in July 2024, while he recently appeared in the TGL indoor league, which he co-founded with fellow golfer Rory McIlroy.

The 50-year-old revealed that he could play at the Masters, but after the latest accident, it is certain that we will not see him at this prestigious tournament. 

It is difficult to predict with certainty the exact date of his return, considering that Tiger has repeatedly intended to return, but situations like this make the prognosis very uncertain.

This incident further tarnished the reputation of one of the greatest golfers of all time. While the legal process continues, it remains an open question how the case will end, but also what impact it will have on his future – both on and off the course.
