The PGA of America has opted for a comeback: Jim Furyk, former captain in Paris, will lead Team USA at Adare Manor.

The competition, named after the trophy donated by Englishman Samuel Ryder (1858-1936) to the American federation in 1924, is co-managed by the European Tour and the PGA of America.

From 1927 to 1971, the tournament was played between the United States and Great Britain, with a clear American dominance (15-3) and only one draw. In 1973, Ireland was incorporated into Great Britain, and in 1979, the rest of continental Europe was incorporated. Following the acceptance of the European team as a rival to the United States, the tournament was much more balanced from 1979 to 1999, with six American victories, five European victories, and one draw. From 2002 to the present, Europe has won the tournament the most, with nine victories, while the United States has achieved three victories.

The Ryder Cup is hosted alternately on both continents in odd-numbered years. British golf courses have historically been chosen for the European tournaments, with the exception of the 1997 edition, held at Valderrama Golf Club (Spain) in honor of former Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros, the 2018 edition at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (France), and the 2023 edition at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club (Italy). Due to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the scheduled Ryder Cup was played the following year, subsequently moving the competition to even-numbered years, until the 2018 edition. The next tournament, scheduled for 2020, was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus returning the Ryder Cup to odd-numbered years once again.[1]

Among the European ranks, it’s worth noting the presence, on three different occasions (1993, 1995, and 1997), of one of the most celebrated Italian players in golf history, Costantino Rocca, remembered for his famous hole-in-one in the 1995 edition. Italians Francesco Molinari and Edoardo Molinari were the first brothers to compete for the European team in the same Ryder Cup, competing simultaneously in the 2010 edition. Francesco Molinari also competed in the 2012 edition in the United States and the 2018 edition in France. Both Molinari brothers were also present in 2025, this time as vice-captains for the European team.

The defending champion selection is the European team that retained its 2023 title by winning the tournament in the 2025 edition.
