Born on April 9, 1957, Ballesteros’s story with golf began on the course in his hometown of Pedreña. First as a caddie and then hitting the clubs himself, Seve grew and progressed through the ranks to become a professional player, with a remarkable ability to connect with shots that other players couldn’t even imagine.

In 1974 he turned professional and soon racked up his first victories. His first on the European Tour came at the 1976 Dutch Open with an absolute exhibition; his first on the PGA Tour, at the 1978 Greensboro Open. But it was the subsequent victories that began to build his legend.

His definitive consecration came at the 1979 British Open, where he became the youngest winner of the century in the most historic major tournament on the planet. Just nine months later, Ballesteros added the first of his two Masters titles (1980 and 1983), a collection he completed with two more British Opens (1984 and 1988).

However, if there is one tournament to which Ballesteros’s story will always be linked, it is the Ryder Cup. The undisputed leader of Europe in the eighties and nineties, he won four titles as a player (1985, 1987, retained in 1989 and 1995) and one as captain (1997), the latter on home soil in Spain. But beyond the successes, what remains is the transmission of a character that has been ingrained ever since, a hallmark of a team that continues to look to him as a role model.

A great historical icon of the European Tour, he still holds the undisputed record for titles on the circuit with no fewer than fifty victories. In addition to those majors and Ryder Cup victories, he won nine PGA Tour titles and held the world number one ranking for 61 weeks.

Given the significance of his legacy, a heartfelt tribute will be paid to him this Thursday on the first day of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship at the Real Club de Golf El Prat. The inaugural edition of the tournament, which kicks off the road to the 2031 Ryder Cup, will honor one of the most iconic figures in the history of golf and of a tournament that Camiral will host in five years’ time.

This tribute will be visible both on the course and among the players. The organizers have asked participants to wear white and blue in remembrance of the colors Seve wore so often in the Ryder Cup. Furthermore, images of Ballesteros and some of his most iconic victories will be displayed on several tees and greens throughout the course. Fifteen years later, the memory of Severiano Ballesteros remains as vibrant as ever.
