Legendary golfer Tiger Woods was arrested on Friday, March 27, in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence, after a traffic accident in which his car overturned.

According to the Martin County Sheriff, Woods was driving a Land Rover when he crashed into a pickup truck pulling a small trailer. After the collision, his vehicle overturned.

Police observed signs that Woods may have been impaired at the scene.

«Our investigators determined that he was exhibiting signs of intoxication,» the sheriff said, adding that Woods will face charges of driving under the influence, causing property damage and refusing to be tested.

The investigation found that Woods was driving erratically just before the crash. The pickup truck driver said he saw the Land Rover approaching at high speed and tried to take cover, but there was no room on the narrow road to avoid the collision. Woods tried to avoid a direct impact at the last moment, but hooked the trailer, after which the vehicle overturned.

After the crash, Woods was able to get out of the car through the passenger door.

The sheriff said Woods cooperated with police, but was cautious in his statements and refused to provide a urine sample for additional testing, which is why he was formally charged with driving under the influence.

It was emphasized that the alcohol test did not show the presence of alcohol in the body, which points to the possibility of the influence of other substances. Woods was not injured in the accident, but he was taken into custody and held for at least eight hours, according to procedures.

The police emphasized that there will be no preferential treatment despite his fame, writes CNN.

«It doesn’t matter who you are – if you break the law, the law must be enforced,» the sheriff’s office said, adding that they will still take care of his safety while in custody.

This isn’t the first time Woods has faced trouble like this – he’s been arrested for driving under the influence before, including cases in 2009 and 2017.

The incident comes as Woods attempts to return to professional golf after a string of injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon and multiple back surgeries.

President Donald Trump, who called him a close friend, briefly commented on the case.

“I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that’s all I know. A very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man. But some difficulty,” Trump said.

Among the many important figures who commented on Tiger’s arrest is the boss of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy, who said that Tiger Woods should be arrested after this incident. 

On his show Wake Up Barstool, Portnoy harshly criticized the legendary golfer, saying that Woods should always have a driver and that such actions are not justified. Although Tiger has been in similar trouble before, it seems that the experienced golfer still hasn’t learned his lesson.

‘What is wrong with Tiger Woods?’

Portnoy notes that Tiger must hire a private driver because moments like this are a real danger. He added that such situations should not be joked about and emphasized that Tiger can injure or even kill someone. 

‘You can have somebody drive you,’ he continued. ‘He should have a driver with him wherever he goes, there is no excuse.

When you get behind the wheel impaired, you’re not just putting yourself at risk. You’re putting anybody else on the road and innocent people [at risk]. 

You can’t make light of it and I have no sympathy for the guy. I don’t know anybody who has ever rolled a car over – this guy rolls it over every two weeks! So, you know what? Put him behind bars, put him in jail for a little bit and make him wake up. 

I have a lot of vices – but my vices only put me in jeopardy and nobody else. Just get a driver! It’s not hard. Seriously, you cannot have sympathy for the guy right now. Get a driver, you’re going to kill somebody innocent.’

The popular golfer was involved in a similar accident for the third time, and once he was found asleep at the wheel with drugs in his system.

After his held in custody, Tiger was driven home with a friend, while fans and media waited to see him. Although there was hope that he could play at this year’s Masters, that now seems far from reality. 

It seems we will have to be patient and wait a long time to see Tiger Woods on the golf course again. The golfer has been facing various difficulties for years and is often at the center of scandals.
