Brooks Koepka has gone through a difficult 2026 season after returning to the PGA Tour, and the experienced American has now added another competition to his schedule for next year.

The 36-year-old will join TGL in 2027 and become part of the new Motor City Golf Club, with Koepka confirming that he liked the idea because it gives him another chance to compete and because the league is close to home.

Koepka left LIV Golf at the end of 2025 and returned to the PGA Tour in February. His first season back did not go the way he wanted, as the five-time major champion recorded only one top-10 finish and failed to reach the FedExCup Playoffs.

The former world No. 1 was later announced as the first player on Motor City Golf Club’s roster. The Detroit-based team will make its TGL debut in 2027 as the seventh team.

Koepka spoke about that decision ahead of this week’s Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg.

Koepka explains why he joined TGL

“I felt comfortable when I met with TGL,” Koepka said.

“It’s something to do. It’s close by, and I think if you kind of look at it, the guys who have played well over the last little bit have played in it.

“I don’t know if there’s an advantage to it or not. But it seems like something fun, something I’m interested in. I think it will be a cool experience.”

TGL has already included names such as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa. Los Angeles Golf Club won the 2026 SoFi Cup, while Motor City will now enter the competition next season.

The American made 11 cuts in 16 PGA Tour starts this season and finished in the top 25 six times. His best result was a tie for ninth at the Cognizant Classic, while he also finished tied for 12th at the Masters.

Koepka was much less satisfied with his putting. PGA Tour statistics currently place him 12th in Strokes Gained: Approach, but only 115th in Strokes Gained: Putting.

That problem was very clear at the Wyndham Championship, where he needed a high finish to reach the FedExCup Playoffs but ended the week tied for 67th.

“I think it’s pretty pathetic that I can’t get through,” Koepka said after missing the playoffs.

“Zero top 10s basically in two years. To be in the prime of your career and be as good as I think I am, I think that’s very pathetic, disappointing. Just need to go home and completely reevaluate everything.”

Koepka brings back the putter from his biggest wins

One of the changes has already happened. Brooks brought an old putter back into his bag for the Irish Open, the same model he used during the period in which he won five major championships.

“You can’t really get a feel for it until the competition. But, everything feels like it’s going in the right direction,” he said.

“I’m just trying to stay positive. I still believe I can go win any week, any day, any tournament. But when you’re putting like that and it’s holding you back, it’s very tough to win.

You’ve just got to deal with it and move on and make some changes.”

His first round in Ireland showed that there is still work to do. Koepka opened with a five-over round at Doonbeg in difficult windy conditions, leaving him well behind early leader Joaquin Niemann, who finished at five under.

The Irish Open is Koepka’s second appearance in the tournament. He also played at The K Club in 2025 but missed the cut.

The veteran still believes his game is good enough to win again, while putting remains the area causing him the most frustration.

His return to the PGA Tour has also been positive away from results. After the Wyndham Championship, Koepka said he had loved being back and described his overall happiness as “10 out of 10.”

TGL will now give him something different during the 2027 season. The format is played indoors at the SoFi Center in Florida, so Koepka will not have to travel far.

Motor City has not yet completed its roster, with more names expected to be announced before the new season starts.

The experienced golfer hopes that next season will be much better for him and bring many exciting moments.

There are not many people who doubt Koepka’s quality, but it will be important for him to once again show the level of golf that fans were used to seeing during his first spell on the PGA Tour, before he left to join LIV Golf.
