Rory McIlroy domina de nuevo y gana su quinto trofeo de escritores de golf

Rory McIlroy had the honor of winning the AGW Golf Writers Trophy for the fifth time, after a great season behind him that could have been even better. The Northern Irishman previously won this award in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2022. McIlroy had several brilliant performances, for which he was rewarded by golf journalists, who closely followed his progress.

Rory McIlroy feels honored to have been named AGW’s Golfer of the Year for the fifth time. The season behind us was marked by successes for him, but also moments where Rory had to remain disappointed. 

The first thing that fans think of is certainly the US Open, where at the last moment McIlroy was left without the Majors he had wanted for so long. Rory referred to the European record, which he shares with Seve Ballesteros. The 34-year-old thanked AGW for the support from the first day of his career.

“I am honoured to have been named the AGW’s Golfer of the Year for the fifth time,” McIlroy said, as reported by Irish Golfer.

“2024 was a year of ups and downs, but finishing the season with a win at the DP World Tour Championship and claiming my sixth Race to Dubai title is an achievement I am very proud of.

“To match Seve Ballesteros’ haul of European titles is a milestone I will always cherish. I want to thank the AGW for their support and commitment to the great game of golf.”

AGW President Philip Reid said Rory McIlroy’s fifth AGW Golfer of the Year award was another significant moment in his career. McIlroy has achieved many successes in his long career. In moments when he is mostly the target of criticism, awards like this show him that most golf experts, fans, and journalists truly appreciate his work.

McIlroy became the record holder for the number of wins of this trophy, along with the big names of the golf scene. Rory deserved to be among such an elite with successes in the seasons behind us.

Reid stressed that McIlroy won four times on the world stage in the previous year and that his career continues to build towards a great legacy. The Northern Irishman finished the season with his sixth Harry Vardon trophy for victory in the DP World Tour standings.

The AGW president, on behalf of all AGW members, congratulated McIlroy on his achievements and thanked him for his constant cooperation with members at tournaments. AGW and Rory McIlroy hope to work together in the future as well. The Northern Irishman expects to win this award in the coming years and become a record holder.

Bernhard Langer

The journalists had an interesting choice, considering that the Great Britain and Ireland Team, which regained the Curtis Cup, was also on the list. Bernhard Langer, a golf veteran from Germany, came in third. The journalists showed how much they appreciate his work, and the passion that the experienced golfer has for the sport. Bernhard recently revealed that he will play his last Masters next year, although he had originally planned to do so this year.

Langer stressed that he will have a hard time accepting the fact that this is the last Masters for him. The 67-year-old is aware that every story has an end, including this one. Looking at the history of this competition and the memories associated with it, Langer admitted that he will be emotional. His family and friends will be part of the competition, which will only deepen the emotions for him. Langer feels that it is time for new faces on the golf scene, although his love for golf is still there.

«It will be very difficult,» Langer said.

«It will be emotional for me to say goodbye to the US Masters as a competitor, especially with all of the family and friends I’m going to have there.

I’ve got friends from Europe, Germany and then all of my family will be there. My kids and my grandkids too. I’ll be teary-eyed coming up the 18th. It’s going to be a tough (emotional) one, but I’ve had my time, now it’s time for the young guys. It’s a young man’s golf course…»

The journalists showed they really appreciate his character and work, even though he didn’t win. It will be interesting to see who will be in the competition for this award next year. It’s not just important that you are a quality golfer winning the tournaments. It’s also important to what kind of person you are, how important you are to golf, and your behavior outside the golf scene.
